Gastritis is an inflammation of the mucosa of the stomach.
It manifests with discomfort, cramps, and intense and persistent pain. The symptoms of gastritis often present as acute attacks, but very frequently evolve into a chronic disorder.
The symptoms are generally felt between meals (after 1-5 hours) and may be attenuated by introducing more food; preferably dry, such as bread or pasta.
In most cases gastritis is attributable to stressinfections, or the action of irritants; for example, medicinal products such as NSAID anti-inflammatory drugs, which can damage the stomach lining.
Gastritis should never be left untreated: it can lead to such serious complications as anemia and ulcer.
